Google launched Universal Cart in the US on Thursday, a new shopping tool designed to let users collect and monitor products across Search and the Gemini app. Previewed earlier at Google I/O in May, the feature functions as a central hub that saves items and shopping progress from multiple retailers so consumers can manage their purchases in one place.

Beyond saving items, Universal Cart monitors deals and availability by sending notifications for price drops and when out-of-stock items return. The tool also provides tailored assistance at checkout by surfacing relevant promo codes and considering credit card perks. Checkout relies on Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol, an open standard introduced earlier this year to connect AI agents and retailers.

Universal Cart expands Google's suite of AI-powered e-commerce features, joining conversational product discovery and the Let Google Call tool. Major tech competitors like Amazon and OpenAI are also introducing agentic commerce features to expand the utility of AI chatbots beyond simple question answering. This launch highlights the ongoing industry push toward integrated, AI-driven shopping experiences.

Why it matters: Universal Cart brings multi-retailer product tracking and automated deal alerts directly into Google Search and the Gemini app for US shoppers.
