OpenAI acquired the four-year-old AI biotech software startup Orchestra Bio on Tuesday, as announced via its official website. Financial terms of the acquisition were not publicly disclosed, though the startup had previously raised approximately $20 million by 2025 from investors such as Andreessen Horowitz, Atria, and 8VC.

Orchestra specializes in developing artificial intelligence agents designed to assist biotechnology companies with the complex operational details of drug discovery, including financial tracking and clinical trial scheduling. Following the deal, OpenAI is integrating Orchestra's team and technology into Rosalind, its specialized life sciences research model, and the corresponding Rosalind Workbench tool.

The Rosalind Workbench serves as a harness helping researchers plan experiments and analyze outcomes, with enterprise customers already including major pharmaceutical firms like Moderna and Novo Nordisk. This acquisition highlights how leading AI laboratories are expanding their software offerings into massive industry sectors like pharmaceuticals, opting to absorb specialized startups rather than compete with them.
