SpaceX CEO Elon Musk confirmed that Grok Bot usage limits were unexpectedly maxed out for users due to costs that were unsustainably high relative to revenue. Over Halloween weekend, some users reported their weekly usage jumping from 50% to 100% overnight without heavy activity. Musk addressed the sudden restrictions in a reply on X on Sunday, though he has not yet detailed how subscribers' limits will be affected moving forward.

The limitations arrive as Grok Bot continues to be highlighted as a major success for SpaceX, with recent filings showing that artificial intelligence makes up 52 percent of the company's income. The renamed Super Intelligence division recently turned a profit of $431 million, though it was offset by $1.2 billion in one-time costs from an acquisition of Cursor. Musk previously described Grok Bot as experiencing the fastest product growth he has ever witnessed.

This action highlights the ongoing economic challenges of scaling artificial intelligence services amid heavy computational demands. As companies navigate high operational expenses, managing user access remains critical for maintaining financial stability.
