OpenAI launched the Rosalind Academic Plan, offering US university research labs up to 30 free seats on the Business Standard plan for one year. The initiative, which excludes API access, is designed to support academic research in the life sciences.

The program features GPT-Rosalind, an AI model built for complex biological questions and deep reasoning. Through the Rosalind Workbench, this model connects to specialized tools for genomics, medicinal chemistry, and lab experiments. OpenAI vets all applying institutions, lead researchers, and planned uses before granting access, and continuously monitors how the model is used.

Approved researchers can work on sensitive scientific questions under strict safety safeguards that factor in the approved research context. OpenAI stated that it does not train on research data by default, and application details are available in its help center. This plan matters because it provides academic life science labs with free access to specialized AI tools while implementing monitored safety protocols for sensitive biological research.
