Venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz published its seventh ranking of consumer AI products in 2024, revealing that while nearly half of US consumers use artificial intelligence, only 4.5 percent pay for a subscription to tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude. The report tracks observed spending on US consumer cards for the first time, showing that revenue is heavily concentrated among professional users and creators rather than casual consumers.

Within the small base of paying users, the top one percent spend an average of about $900 a month on work and creative automation tools, while the typical paying user spends around $25. ChatGPT remains the clear leader in web and mobile traffic, ahead of Google Gemini and Anthropic Claude. However, Anthropic monetizes effectively, with a larger share of Claude users subscribing to priciest tiers starting at $100 per month compared to rivals OpenAI and Google.

High model costs continue to push the artificial intelligence industry almost entirely toward subscriptions rather than ad revenue. High-spending prosumers favor tools for building and design, creating a distinct split between casual free users and intensive paid subscribers.

Why it matters: This spending concentration shows that professional use currently drives the primary paying market for consumer artificial intelligence products.
