Google has made its SynthID Detector publicly available, allowing anyone to check if an image, video, or audio file was generated by Google artificial intelligence models and its partners. The detection tool spots invisible watermarks embedded in content produced by models including Gemini, Veo, and Lyria, while supporting multiple standard file formats such as JPG, PNG, MP4, and MP3. SynthID functions specifically as a proprietary watermarking verifier rather than a universal AI detector, meaning it only flags content that carries its specific embedded watermark.

Alongside Google, companies like OpenAI, Nvidia, and Kakao also utilize SynthID for media watermarking, and Apple is expected to adopt the technology soon. SynthID detection is already integrated directly into Google Search, the Gemini app, and the Chrome browser, which currently handles one million verification requests on a daily basis. Google reports that over 180 billion AI-generated images and videos now carry SynthID watermarks to date.

This public release matters because expanding accessible verification tools helps improve media transparency and provenance tracking as generative artificial intelligence content becomes more widespread across digital platforms.
