Meta announced Muse Gadgets, an open-source initiative that allows hobbyists to build custom AI hardware using firmware for ESP32 boards and a Linux SDK. The Apache 2.0 licensed project connects homemade devices directly to Meta's AI agent Muse. Alongside the DIY toolkit, Meta developed the Muse Home Link, a small USB-C gadget designed to connect Muse to home networks and control HTTPS-enabled devices like TVs and speakers. Meta produced 5,000 units of the Home Link to ship for free to Muse subscribers while supplies last.

This open-source approach provides strategic benefits by allowing Meta to observe community-built form factors as the industry continues to search for standard AI hardware designs. Major tech competitors including Apple and OpenAI are actively developing their own proprietary devices, whereas Meta's existing Ray-Ban smart glasses remain one of the most successful consumer AI gadgets currently available on the market.

This project matters because engaging the open-source hardware community gives Meta valuable market insights into desired physical form factors while expanding the ecosystem for its AI agent.
