Figma co-founder and CEO Dylan Field has expressed concerns about the model context protocol (MCP), yet the design company is expanding its support for the open-source standard by adding 20 new MCP partners. Announced at Figma's first Config conference in India, the new partners include Amp, ClickUp, Dia, Junie by JetBrains, Linear, Meta Muse, Mistral, Notion, OpenCode, and Sarvam Agents. Despite his reservations, Field also confirmed that Figma plans to support the open-source tool Pi.

During media briefings and online discussions, Field highlighted that MCP has tons of room for improvement and is advantaged more toward frontier labs, pointing out issues with asymmetric context sharing such as Anthropic not exposing its various cloud resources via MCP. Furthermore, Field noted that Figma hesitates to be fully open because exposing more data through MCP increases the risk of abuse, requiring the company to carefully manage potential security threats even though most users harbor no malicious intent.

This development matters because it illustrates the delicate balance platform companies must strike between open ecosystem integration and data security risks as standardized AI agent protocols mature.
