Amazon devices chief Panos Panay believes personal computing is moving toward a future where ambient AI devices will replace the need to use traditional apps. Speaking at TechCrunch Disrupt on Thursday, Panay explained that instead of users actively pointing, shooting, and returning to modern smartphone tools, future devices will work quietly in the background using sensors and artificial intelligence to anticipate needs.

To advance this vision, Amazon introduced new Bee AI wearables on Thursday, including a versatile band worn on the wrist or as a pendant, alongside a credit-card-sized device that magnetically attaches to smartphones. These gadgets passively record audio to extract reminders, to-dos, and daily insights without storing raw audio recordings. To ensure security, conversations are processed in real time, deleted afterward, and transcripts are encrypted with keys controlled entirely by the user's device.

Panay emphasized that prioritizing customer privacy and control is critical when designing ambient hardware. While acknowledging that smartphones will remain important, the Amazon executive envisions a transformative intelligence layer connecting various form factors to handle tasks automatically. This ambient computing shift matters because it aims to keep users present and productive by eliminating the need to manually open and navigate individual apps.
