Meta has launched its Muse agent, which provides every user with a free, full-fledged cloud computer running a complete Ubuntu Linux image. According to David Singleton, VP of Engineering at Meta Superintelligence Labs, the system allows users to install software, write and compile code, and browse the web just as they would on a physical machine. The app has quickly become a surprise hit, pulling in over 500,000 users in its first week and hitting number one in the Apple App Store. At Meta Connect 2026, the company expanded the platform's capabilities by adding real-time video chats, dedicated email addresses, and Mac app control.
To ensure safety, the Muse architecture separates the workspace from sensitive system components using a "Runtime Cell" for unrestricted user and agent activity, alongside a "Sentinel" process that monitors threats from the outside. Passwords and credentials are stored securely outside the cell, and the setup provides its own root filesystem to prevent privileged access to Meta infrastructure or other users' data while guarding against prompt injection. Meta also built full transparency into the system, allowing users to view every file and inspect the Markdown files Muse creates while reasoning through answers.
This cloud computer feature highlights Meta's strategic shift toward building accessible products with wide reach as it competes in the broader artificial intelligence landscape.
