YouTube Music announced Wednesday a new labeling system to improve transparency for songs created using generative AI, allowing listeners to easily identify AI involvement in composition and vocals. The labels will appear on the player page and extend to the main YouTube app, providing details on how AI was used when clicked. YouTube collaborated with music partners and used its own detection tools, requiring partners to choose from three designations: Fully Gen AI, Partly Gen AI, or No Gen AI.
This rollout arrives as AI-generated music floods streaming platforms, prompting varied responses across the industry. Apple Music plans similar transparency tags, Spotify utilizes labels and spam filters, and Deezer and TIDAL label entirely AI-generated tracks while excluding them from recommendations and royalties. Unlike platforms enforcing stricter blocks or withholding royalties, YouTube focuses on disclosure rather than restrictions, allowing AI-assisted tracks to remain eligible for monetization as the company experiments with its own AI music creation tools.
This labeling update matters because it establishes a standardized disclosure method for generative audio on one of the world's largest streaming platforms, addressing transparency concerns as AI-created tracks rapidly proliferate across the music industry.
