Ethereum researchers warn that AI-assisted mathematics could potentially break crypto wallet signature systems in a severe worst-case scenario. In a post on X, leading Ethereum researcher Justin Drake urged the blockchain industry to prepare a bunker mode to protect against these emerging threats.

Drake recommends moving funds to addresses that have never signed a transaction, as signing reveals the public key that attackers could use to derive private keys. Conversely, funds remain protected as long as only the public key hash is visible, because the original key cannot be recovered from the hash alone.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin agreed with the assessment in a reply on X but advised against rushing migrations, noting he has lost more funds to botched migrations than to hacks. Long-term, Buterin advocates for system architectures reliant primarily on hash functions, warning that even lattice-based cryptographic schemes could be weakened by future artificial intelligence advances.

This ongoing debate highlights how rapid advancements in artificial intelligence could force unexpected security overhauls across the blockchain industry.
