Anthropic announced Thursday that Claude is gaining a new Personal Finance tool that allows users to connect their bank and credit card accounts through Plaid to analyze their spending. The feature provides read-only access, ensuring the chatbot cannot move, manage, or invest user funds while serving as an interactive financial companion.

The tool enables users to ask questions in everyday language about their balances, transactions, and spending patterns, such as checking where money went over a month or identifying duplicate charges and unexpected fees. In addition to categorizing expenses like rent and shopping, the system can explain complex financial concepts like APR and calculate total interest paid over the past year.

To address privacy concerns, Anthropic confirmed that financial data access is strictly limited to account details, balances, and up to two years of transaction history, and chats within the finance hub are excluded from model training. The feature begins rolling out in beta this week for Pro, Max, and Ultra plan users in the United States, positioning Claude to compete directly with similar account-connection capabilities introduced by OpenAI's ChatGPT earlier in the year.

This launch matters because it expands AI assistants into personal money management with privacy safeguards, offering users direct transaction analysis without advertisements or sponsored product recommendations.
