OpenAI has acquired Pierre Computer Company, the startup behind Code Storage and several open-source tools, to improve version control workflows for AI coding agents. Pierre's libraries, including Trees, Diffs, and Highlights, already power OpenAI's Codex coding agent. These tools enable fast project file navigation, inline code fixing, and real-time syntax highlighting for both human developers and AI systems. Code Storage manages code repository history through Git.
The acquisition aims to help Git workflows adapt as developers and AI agents write code side by side and handle tasks in parallel. OpenAI currently operates Pando, a proprietary version control backend designed to support both human and AI workloads. Following the acquisition, Pierre's open-source projects will remain open source, while the transaction itself still requires regulatory approval.
This strategic purchase highlights how core developer infrastructure must evolve to support the growing demands of automated software engineering.
