WindBorne Systems secured a U.S. Air Force contract worth up to $49 million to provide atmospheric data collected by its fleet of autonomous weather balloons. The Redwood City startup, founded in 2015, currently operates around 700 weather balloons globally, feeding empirical sensor readings directly into its deep-learning weather forecasting model.
While the contract could reach nearly $50 million, the Air Force operates on a pay-as-needed basis for specific regional orders, having spent $1.7 million so far. Awarded without competitive bidding, the funding will support the growth of the balloon constellation and research and development for hardware performance. This agreement builds on WindBorne's previous government collaborations and its recent $37 million Series B funding round.
The integration of empirical balloon data into deep-learning architectures reflects a broader shift in meteorology toward AI-driven forecasting models. WindBorne recently released WeatherMesh 6 and successfully navigated an unpowered flight system into a typhoon's eye using its proprietary weather models. This contract highlights the growing reliance of defense and government agencies on private sector AI capabilities and autonomous data collection for critical operational decisions.
