OpenAI and Synopsys have signed a multi-year strategic partnership to build a specialized AI model for semiconductor and chip design called GPT-Synopsys. Synopsys, a maker of electronic design automation (EDA) tools used by engineers to design computer chips, is licensing its software for the project. The new model combines OpenAI technology with Synopsys EDA tools to reason about chip design and verification while directly operating the software, allowing engineers to delegate design objectives and review the output.
The GPT-Synopsys model will run on OpenAI infrastructure, with customer data encrypted and excluded from training. Early tests involving semiconductor customers are already underway, and both companies plan to market the product together while sharing revenue. Synopsys CEO Sassine Ghazi stated that artificial intelligence could significantly speed up the design process, while OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman views the collaboration as a pathway to better chips and better AI.
This partnership matters because combining advanced artificial intelligence with electronic design automation can accelerate semiconductor development and hardware innovation.
