Nvidia is reportedly in talks to guarantee billions in debt financing for AI cloud provider Nscale’s planned Anthropic data center in West Virginia. The proposed arrangement, corroborated by Bloomberg following an initial report by The Information, would involve Nvidia acting as a co-signer on customer loans to help secure financing for electricity and construction costs. Anthropic has already signed a massive $44.6 billion contract for the project's first building, which is slated to utilize Nvidia's next-generation Vera Rubin chips.

The potential deal highlights the extreme financial pressures facing the artificial intelligence infrastructure boom as investors grow increasingly jittery over massive capital outlays. Under the discussed residual value guarantee, Nvidia would step in if Nscale defaulted on construction payments, temporarily taking over the facility to find a new buyer and tenant. This marks an escalation in Nvidia's financial backing, extending beyond its previous support for leases and chip purchases into direct construction debt guarantees.

Nscale has previously faced struggles getting its ambitious data center projects off the ground, including construction runoff issues in West Virginia and the recent withdrawal of Microsoft from a planned site in England. Meanwhile, Nvidia has extended approximately $170 billion in investments and credit support to neoclouds and large customers. Why it matters: The arrangement underscores how chipmakers are increasingly stepping in as financial backers to keep critical AI infrastructure buildouts afloat amid mounting market pressures and investor skepticism.
