Former Plaud executive Peter Mo has raised $26 million in funding for Ambi, a new AI application designed to listen to users in the background and provide real-time intelligence and insights. Announced on Monday, the funding rounds were led by Luminous Ventures and original design manufacturer Huaqin. Ambi is rolling out applications for iPhones, Macs, and Apple Watch to act as continuous notetakers, aiming to capture context throughout the entire day.
Unlike traditional meeting notetakers that process information after calls end, Ambi features an AI agent that proactively surfaces relevant knowledge and suggestions during meetings using calendar data, knowledge bases, and web searches. Co-founder and CEO Peter Mo noted that the startup plans to release a desktop application to observe work and store memory for personalized suggestions, alongside a dedicated hardware device equipped with a screen, speaker, camera, and microphones.
The continuous listening capability has drawn privacy and data security scrutiny regarding unconsented third-party recordings. While Mo stated that ambient data capture is disabled by default, is easily toggled off by users, and relies on encrypted data without storing raw audio, the company acknowledges that enforcing disclosure to recorded third parties remains an unresolved industry-wide challenge.
Why it matters: Ambi's $26 million funding highlights growing investor appetite for continuous background AI agents, even as the industry grapples with persistent privacy and consent concerns.
